The Board is working with industry to address skill gaps, develop industry specific training strategies and meet the skills needs of growth industries. Collaborative partnerships between industry and Government are critical to the efficiency and responsiveness of the vocational education and training system. The Government seeks advice from industry about their training needs, the development of training initiatives and the promotion of the training system.

In New South Wales industry advice is obtained through state-based Industry Training Advisory Bodies (ITABs), and a tripartite Industry Skills Forum.

Industry Training Advisory Bodies provide advice for apprenticeship and traineeship arrangements in NSW, vocational education and training in schools, the development, review and implementation of training packages, and accreditation and registration processes. Information provided by NSW ITABs informs the strategic planning processes for the development of vocational education in New South Wales.

The Industry Skills Forum provides strategic advice to the Minister, through the Board of Vocational Education and Training, on labour market trends, industry skills needs and strategies for gaining detailed industry advice to enhance the relevance and responsiveness of the vocational education and training system in New South Wales. Critical aspects of the Forum’s role are to:

  • assist with the development of state-wide strategies to address skill gaps

  • assist with the skill development needs of new and emerging industries

  • meet the current and future skills needs of industry and regions, and

  • lift the level of innovation, enterprise and productivity across all industries and occupations.

BVET Chairman Bert Evans, AO chairs the Industry Skills Forum and members are drawn from bodies that represent a broad cross-section of industry, including small business. The following organisations are represented on the Forum:

  • Australian Industry Group

  • State Chamber of Commerce (NSW)

  • Australian Information Industry Association

  • Australian Business Limited

  • Australian Retailers Association, NSW

  • TAFE Teachers Association

  • Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union
