Innovative Vocational Education Programs in Stage 5 of Schooling

Vocational education and training is a highly valued option for students in Years 11 and 12. More than 52,000 NSW students, representing over one third of senior school students enrolled in vocational courses as part of the Higher School Certificate. These students receive a recognised vocational qualification, as well as their HSC. Their vocational courses put them a step ahead once they leave school and move into further education and training or employment.
The NSW Board of Vocational Education and Training in conjunction with the NSW Board of Studies initiated this project to explore options for expanding vocational education and training (VET) pathways in Years 9 and 10 (Stage 5 of schooling). 25 pilot schools trialled a range of curriculum models that would be credentialed as a part of either the School Certificate or Higher School Certificate.
The pilot indicated positive outcomes in terms of impact on student engagement, retention and achievement.
