Brokering Partnerships for Workforce Development in the New Manufacturing Sector
The manufacturing and engineering industry sector is experiencing significant and persistent trade skills and labour shortages which are compromising the sector’s capacity to respond to increased global competition. Research commissioned by TAFE NSW identifies significant changes in skill and labour needs in the NSW manufacturing and engineering sector and a need for workforce development strategies.
The Board of Vocational Education and Training initiated this project to improve the capacity of TAFE NSW to service the workforce development needs of enterprises in the NSW manufacturing and engineering sector. Five regional networks have been developed as a part of the project.
Riverina Region: This regional network is coordinating a campaign to encourage regional manufacturing enterprises to use the Competitive Manufacturing initiative as a means to assist them to be more globally competitive through innovative workforce skill development. The network consists of a group of enterprises with a focus on their common interest in improved manufacturing processes.
Mid North Coast Region: This network, in collaboration with the existing Manufacture Coffs Coast Network, is finding new ways of working between industry, government and education in order to promote and build a highly skilled workforce for advanced manufacturing firms in the Coffs Coast region.
Western Region:The group is identifying regional skill requirements and brokering partnerships with enterprises to develop training solutions that address skill requirements of the region.
South Western Sydney Region: Thisregional industry network is promoting training and employment of entry-level traineeships and apprenticeships targeting local ethnic groups in the Bankstown region. The focus of the network is on ethnic youth in the manufacturing and engineering sector for the Bankstown region.
Western Sydney Region: This network is addressing the potential for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) to actively integrate competitive manufacturing principles into their business operations and improve their capability to adopt high performance work practices. The focus is on engaging TAFE NSW and industry personnel in working together to develop 'whole-of-business approach' to skill development.
