Promoting and Enhancing the Flexibility of Apprenticeships and Traineeships

The NSW Apprenticeship and Traineeship Act 2001 encourages competency-based apprenticeship and traineeship training arrangements.

NSW industrial awards reflect a time-based approach, including annual wage rates for apprenticeship terms. The NSW Act recognises this by setting a nominal term or terms of training. It provides flexibility for this term to be extended or reduced according to: previous training completed; qualifications awarded to the apprentice/trainee; or evidence of workplace competence.

Competency based completion may be achieved by agreement of the employer and their apprentice/trainee supported by the production of evidence of the attainment of the required nationally recognised AQF qualification specified in the relevant vocational training order.

To improve application of these provisions under the Act, the Board initiateded this project for a promotional program to develop a range of effective information media formats to engage with target audiences. The promotional material developed included print based and web based step by step ‘How to go about achieving competency based or early completion in an apprenticeship or traineeship’, utilising relevant case studies. The project was completed in 2006 and the promotional material distributed to the target audience.
