Skills for Sustainability

In January 2005 the Board commissioned research to investigate skills for sustainable business development in NSW and to understand the impact of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions which poses a serious long term threat to the economic and physical wellbeing of all societies. Given the significance of this threat, the global response to climate change will be one of the most important drivers of economic changes during this century. The ability to adapt to these fundamentally changed circumstances will be a central determinant in the success of the NSW economy in the foreseeable future. The report of this research is available for downloading.

The Board’s Skills for Sustainability 2007 report emphasizes the importance of skills in achieving environmental sustainability and identifies gaps and opportunities in sustainability training in NSW.

The availability of vocational skills for installing and managing ‘green’ technology influences take-up of the technologies, and in turn, opportunities for greenhouse gas reduction and energy and water savings.  Consequences for NSW of failing to invest in environmental skills are slow progress in becoming a more sustainable community, and weak performance in realising the business and economic benefits that flow from adaptation to environmental change.

To improve the availability of sustainability skills for business, the Board has commissioned a project – Business Guide: 10 Steps to ‘greening’ your workforce and Demonstration Projects: Green Occupations. The project will be complemented with increased environmental training and professional development for training organisations to increase their capability to deliver training.
