Improving VET Outcomes using Personalised Learning

The focus in education and training was to improve student outcomes and to achieve the best possible outcome for every student. It is believed that students become better learners with higher achievement outcomes if they are given personalised support.

The Board was keen to see New South Wales take the lead in exploring how a personalised learning model, with the assistance of information and communications technologies, might be used to transform vocational education and training services to better meet this diversity of client need and improve the outcomes they achieve. Industry also frequently expresses a need for training which meets the needs of individual employees.

The Board funded a demonstration project on Improving VET Outcomes using Personalised Learning. This project aimed to demonstrate replicable, generalisable and sustainable models for significantly improving VET outcomes through the application of innovative, personalised learning approaches. As a demonstration project, the intention was to capture current practices as case studies, and to fund new approaches through externally evaluated pilots. The project involved collaboration between local providers and agencies and specialist staff in the Centre for Learning Innovation (CLI) in order to consolidate and extend existing good practice, and introduce new practices. The project used a rolling process with the demonstration model as a leading exemplar which can be extended to new sites in the second year and achieve system-wide application in later years. Professional development of teachers to support this process is a critical component of this project. The project was completed in 2005 and the final report available.

There are online personalised learning communities available on Education Network Australia (EDNA) and Centre for Learning Innovation organises online forums on different activities and approaches related to personalised learning including general concepts, career development and training packages. NSW Department of Education and Training website on Teaching and Learning Resources (TaLe) provides information on online learning materials and its quality and online professional learning communities
