Improved participation in traineeships by Arabic speaking young people and Arabic speaking employers

The Arabic Speaking Youth Traineeship project trialed a range of strategies to increase the uptake of traineeships by young people in Sydney’s Arabic speaking community. The project aimed to increase the participation of young people and business owners in traineeship programs in Sydney’s St George, Bankstown, Granville and Liverpool areas.

One of the project’s key goals was to improve access for Arabic speaking young people to post-school opportunities in further education and training and employment. In line with this goal, the project targetted the training needs of young people in Years 10-12 in local government high schools as well as small business owners in four key industry areas of Information Technology, Business Services (Administration), Retail, and Tourism and Hospitality.

The project was implemented during 2003-2005 by a steering committee comprised of representatives from the Department of Education and Training, TAFE NSW – Southern Sydney and South Western Sydney Institutes, the Premier's Department Arabic Youth Partnership Project and community organisations.
