Visit to Electro Skills, Rhodes, Sydney

In October 2006 the Board visited Electro Skills in the Rhodes Peninsular, Sydney.

Formerly known as the Electro-tech Skills Centre, Electro Skills is a Registered Training Organisation established in 1994 to provide quality, accredited training to the electro-technology industry.

Electro Skills delivers

  • pre-employment training
  • electrical apprenticeships
  • telecommunications traineeships, and
  • post-trade courses.

in lifts, refrigeration and air conditioning, data communications, telecommunications, information technology,  electrical/electronics and industry-specific courses in occupational health and safety.

Electro Skills prides itself on offering a rapid, responsive training service to businesses.

Electro Group is the associated Group Training Company that operates from the same premises. Group Training Companies employ apprentices and trainees and place them with host employers for their on-the-job training.

Between them, therefore, Electro Skills and Electro Group can provide apprentices and trainees their off-the-job training and arrange their employment in companies so they can get their necessary on-the-job training. Many of the classes have a 100% placement rate of students at the end of their apprenticeships.

Electro Skills also offers pre-vocational courses. Prevocational courses provide training to prepare participants for working in a particular job or as an introduction into an apprenticeship or traineeship and may involved work placement. Some of the students taking pre-vocational courses come through the Corporate Partners for Change program run by the Office of the Minister for Western Sydney. The Board got to know more about this program during its visit to Penrith and the Blue Mountains in May 2007.

Board members enjoyed touring Electro Skills’ spacious premises. They comprise workshops, lecture rooms and classrooms fitted with training equipment including computers with training simulation programs.

The visit was a great opportunity to see the operation of a Group Training Company that has an excellent reputation in its industry and to learn about issues for Group Training Companies operating in the NSW training market.
