Vocational Education and Training in NSW Schools

Education and Training Minister, Carmel Tebbutt, has released two key reports which show that Year 11 and 12 students who do vocational education and training courses as part of their HSC have better job prospects.

More than one-third of NSW students are now undertaking VET courses as part of their HSC.

The program has strong industry support with more than 20,000 employers involved, giving students valuable on-the-job experience which often leads to full time work later on.

Key findings include:

  • Students who do VET courses are more likely to continue on to further education and training – whether that be university, TAFE or an apprenticeship or traineeship;

  • A significant positive impact on school retention with 6 in 10 students saying VET courses influenced their decision to stay on at school;

  • Almost 70 per cent said the course made it easier for them to get a job;

  • Nine out of 10 students who received on-the-job training said it was useful;

  • 90 per cent of students who did on-the-job training said it increased their confidence;

  • 7 out of 10 said on-the-job training helped them decide what sort of job they wanted to do;

School-based vocational education and training courses include hospitality, construction, information technology, metals and engineering, primary industries, retail, tourism, and accounting.

In NSW, students are able to combine these courses with academic subjects to get an HSC – allowing them to go straight into the workforce, begin an apprenticeship or traineeship, or go to university after Year 12.

A follow-up Survey is being carried out in 2006.
